Booker T. Washington School Marker Dedication, Oct 2, 2022

    2022 Scholarship Awarded

    Kamren Griffin's Mother, Tonya Roberts, Accepts Scholarship Certificate

    • Freestone County Historical Commission awarded a $500 scholarship certificate to Kamren Griffin at their July 5 meeting.  Accepting the award on his behalf was his mother, Tonya Roberts (center).  Mr. Griffin will be attending Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton to study mechanical engineering.  His winning essay was entitled, "Dogan High School - Home of the Wildcats" in tribute to his grandfather, Leon Preston, who attended Dogan High.

     Freestone Co. Historical Commission, a branch of the Texas Historical Commission, meets quarterly on the 1st Tue. of each quarter.

    FOUNDED 1963 - Helping Keep Texas History Alive!

    The first Freestone County Historical Survey Committee was appointed by Freestone County Judge Leslie Bonner and had its first meeting on Jan. 19, 1963, Historical Preservation Day. Members elected for a two year term were Mrs. C. E. Childs, chairman; Ralph Massey, vice-chairman; Mrs. George Stubbs, secretary; E. D. Deffenbaugh and A. Don Emmons. Letters were sent to Mrs. Gilbert Milner, Mrs. Day Whitaker, Mrs. J. D. Hudson, Mrs. L. L. Bonner, Llewellyn Notley, Fred Campbell, J. S. Baggett and Mrs. Ruby Kate Richardson requesting that they accept an appointment. 

    By years end, Llewellyn Notley was serving as chairman, and is credited as being the first chairman. 

    In 1973, the State changed the organization's name to FREESTONE COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION
