FOUNDED 1963

The first Freestone County Historical Survey Committee was appointed by Freestone County Judge Leslie Bonner and had its first meeting on Jan. 19, 1963, Historical Preservation Day. Members elected for a two year term were Mrs. C. E. Childs, chairman; Ralph Massey, vice-chairman; Mrs. George Stubbs, secretary; E. D. Deffenbaugh and A. Don Emmons. Letters were sent to Mrs. Gilbert Milner, Mrs. Day Whitaker, Mrs. J. D. Hudson, Mrs. L. L. Bonner, Llewellyn Notley, Fred Campbell, J. S. Baggett and Mrs. Ruby Kate Richardson requesting that they accept an appointment.

By years end, Llewellyn Notley was serving as chairman, and is credited as being the first chairman.

In 1973, the State changed the organization's name to FREESTONE COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION.
